Snowflakes floated from the sky like angel feathers from heaven, blanketing the small clearing around the cabin nestled deep in the forest. Flynn stood in the doorway with Bismarck at his side, wincing at the bright white of the snow and contemplating a trip to the woodpile. “What do you think, boy? Do we have enough wood to last us until tomorrow?”
The decision, like all decisions, was difficult for Flynn to make. It was as if he lived at the bottom of the sea and every thought, every movement had to be pushed through a world of dark, heavy water that made him sluggish and weak.
Bismarck let out a yip, then made the decision for Flynn by starting outside. Bismarck thrived in the cold. Sometimes even when the December temperatures hovered in the teens Flynn had to coax him inside with treats. Taking his cue from the dog, Flynn grabbed his coat from the hook beside the door and slipped into it, then pulled the eye patch off his head and replaced it with the dark sunglasses he kept on the small, rustic table beside the door. He stepped out into the frigid mountain air, which served as much as anything to illustrate just how much his circumstances had changed since the holiday season last year.
Last year he’d hosted Matthew and Margaret, their three children, and their seven grandchildren at Tradewinds over the Christmas holiday through New Year’s. They’d filled the house with joy and excitement, delicious scents, and delightful sounds. It had been the nicest Christmas Flynn had spent in a very long time.
Matthew had lobbied hard for Flynn to join them this year at their home in Miami, but Flynn couldn’t do it. He couldn’t endure being around that many people, and besides, he didn’t want to scare the children with his Frankenstein scars.
He’d grown a beard since leaving the hospital. His skin was still so tender that he’d put off shaving at first, and then when he’d let Matthew and Cicero talk him into wintering in the Rockies, he’d figured it made sense to keep it. Now with his hair longer, too, he fit the mountain man image quite nicely.
Not that there was anyone around to see it.
He’d lived here on a twelve-acre section of valley carved away from Storm Mountain Ranch since the first of October. The land was fenced and posted, and except for the UPS driver, he remained blissfully alone. Well, for the most part. Celeste Blessing knocked on his door occasionally. Cicero had showed up twice, and after Matthew’s fourth visit in as many weeks, Flynn had put his foot down. He wasn’t a damned invalid. Not anymore, anyway. He could see again. He could walk again. His friends both had work and families that needed their attention, so he’d told them they weren’t welcome again until after the New Year.
“You’re becoming a hermit,” Cicero had accused on his recent visit.
“Yes,” Flynn had replied, pointing at his eye patch. “I’m a hermit slash mountain man slash pirate, and I couldn’t be happier.
